4-week Introduction to Pottery (Handbuilding)

Sundays, 18th Nov - 9th Dec 2018
9.30am - 12.00pm

This 4-week course (one 2.5 hour class per week) aims to introduce students to some of the main techniques of hand-building such as pinching, coiling and slab-building. During this time, students will be taught to create a variety of forms including bowls, mugs, plates, pouring jugs. You will also be taught how to glazes your pieces. Pieces will be fired at the end of course, and students can come to collect their pieces anytime after. This course is ideal for beginners. For people with only wheel-throwing experience, this course is a great complement in helping you to further develop your work with details, such as making handles and textures.

Week 1: Introduction to handbuilding pottery and the pinching method. Learn how to make items such as small-medium sized bowls, mugs, plates, pouring jugs etc.

Week 2: Introduction to the coiling method. Learn how to make taller pots like bigger bowls, vases, planters, teapots etc.

Week 3: Introduction to the slab method. Learn how to make plates, and more angular shaped pots such as darted cups, beer mugs, pitchers etc.

Week 4: Introduction to glazing methods and types of glazes. Students will be taught to glaze and decorate their own pieces.

4-week Introduction to Pottery (Wheel-throwing)

Saturdays, 15th Dec 2018 - 12th Jan 2019
10.00am - 12.30pm

The foundations of wheel-throwing will be taught during this 4-week course (one 2.5 hour class per week). Step-by-step guidance will be given to guide students to throw cylindrical shapes like bowls and teacups, turning/trimming the bases of students’ pieces, and glazing techniques. After 4 weeks, students will have their own glazed bowls and teacups fired and may be collected anytime after the 4th week. This course is ideal for beginners.

The cost of this course includes clay, use of wheel and tools, materials for decorating and glazing, and firing. Basic tools (for you to keep!) will be under separate costs. This course will take in a maximum of 7 students to provide maximum guidance. Sign-ups will be on a first-come-first-serve basis.
